Healthy gums are the foundation of a strong, lasting smile. That’s why we take gum health seriously at Thacker Riverside Dental. Whether you’re dealing with early signs of gingivitis or more advanced periodontal disease, we’re here to help with personalized, comfortable care that protects your teeth and supports your overall health.

What Is Gum Disease?

Gum disease starts with plaque—a sticky film of bacteria that builds up on your teeth. If it’s not removed through brushing, flossing, and regular cleanings, it can cause the gums to become red, swollen, and irritated. Over time, the gums may begin to pull away from the teeth, creating pockets where bacteria can collect and do more damage.

Early gum disease is called gingivitis, and it can often be reversed with improved hygiene and professional cleanings. If it progresses into periodontitis, more advanced treatment may be needed to prevent tooth and bone loss.

Signs You May Need Periodontal Treatment

  • Gums that bleed when you brush or floss
  • Red, swollen, or tender gums
  • Receding gums or teeth that appear “longer”
  • Bad breath that doesn’t go away
  • Loose teeth or changes in your bite

How We Treat Gum Disease

If you have periodontal pockets or signs of infection, we may recommend:

  • Scaling and root planing to remove plaque and bacteria below the gumline
  • Laser-assisted periodontal therapy (LAPT) using a diode laser to target bacteria and promote healing
  • Oraqix® topical anesthetic for added comfort during treatment—especially for patients with sensitive teeth
  • Chlorhexidine irrigation (Peridex) using an ultrasonic device for deeper gum disinfection

We’ll work with you to create a treatment plan that fits your needs and helps you regain control of your oral health.
