What Does Your Bite Have to Do with the Health of Your Teeth?
You probably know whether your teeth look straight. You may know if your gums are healthy or if you have a filling or crown, but do you know if your bite is working well? Your bite is the way your upper and lower teeth come together. It is something you use countless times every day while eating, speaking, and swallowing, usually without giving it any thought.
At Thacker Riverside Dental, your bite is one of the five pillars of oral health we evaluate because the way your teeth work together can provide important information about their long-term health.
Your Teeth Are Designed to Share the Work
Biting and chewing place forces on your teeth every day. When your bite is functioning well, those forces can be distributed appropriately across the teeth. If certain teeth are consistently receiving more pressure than others, they may experience additional stress over time.
Sometimes the clues are subtle. We may notice that certain teeth are wearing faster than others. A tooth might repeatedly chip, or a restoration may be experiencing more stress than we would expect. You might also notice that your teeth do not seem to come together comfortably. These observations can prompt us to look beyond the individual tooth and ask what is happening when your entire bite comes together.
What Can Tooth Wear Tell Us?
Teeth naturally change with age and use, so some wear is expected. The pattern of that wear, however, can sometimes tell us something about how your teeth are functioning. For example, unusual wear on particular teeth may encourage us to evaluate the way the upper and lower teeth meet. We may also look at tooth position, existing dental work, missing teeth, and other factors that could be influencing the bite.
This does not mean every worn tooth indicates a bite problem. It simply means that instead of looking only at the worn area, we want to understand why it developed. That bigger-picture approach can help us determine what, if anything, needs attention.
Your Bite Can Affect Dental Restorations Too
When we restore a tooth with a filling, crown, bridge, or another restoration, we do not think only about how that individual tooth looks. It also has to function. A crown, for example, needs to fit comfortably within your existing bite and withstand the biting pressure placed on that particular tooth.
That is one reason we carefully evaluate and adjust the way a restoration meets the opposing teeth. If we see repeated damage to dental work, understanding the forces acting on the area can be an important part of figuring out what is happening.
What About Jaw Discomfort?
Your teeth are not the only structures involved in your bite. Your jaw joints and muscles also work every time you open, close, and move your mouth. If you experience jaw discomfort, headaches, difficulty chewing, or other symptoms associated with temporomandibular joint dysfunction, evaluating how the entire system is functioning can help.
At Thacker Riverside Dental, we offer TMJ evaluation and oral appliance therapy when appropriate. Again, the goal is not to assume that every headache, worn tooth, or jaw sound comes from the bite. It is to gather information and understand how the pieces may be working together.
Can Straightening Teeth Improve a Bite?
Orthodontic treatment is often associated with creating a straighter smile, but appearance is only part of the story. The position of your teeth also affects how they come together. For some patients, Invisalign® clear aligners can gradually move teeth into better alignment while also addressing certain bite concerns.
In cases that require traditional orthodontics, we can coordinate care with an orthodontic specialist. Whether treatment is appropriate depends on the individual. A bite that looks different does not automatically need to be changed.
Looking Beyond One Tooth
One reason we evaluate your bite is simple: teeth do not function independently. If we see a worn tooth, repeated chipping, a damaged restoration, or another pattern that catches our attention, treating the visible problem may be only part of the conversation. Sometimes we also want to know why it happened.
At Thacker Riverside Dental, our comprehensive approach considers your teeth, gums, bite, smile, and airway so we can better understand your overall oral health. If you have noticed unusual tooth wear, repeated chipping, jaw discomfort, or simply feel like your teeth don’t come together the way they should, schedule an appointment at our office located in Livermore, KY. We can evaluate your bite, listen to what you have been experiencing, and help you understand whether it may be affecting your dental health.
